ABOUT STUDENTS FOR SCIENCE AND REASON

Students for Science and Reason (SSR) is an educational-based program for student groups and individuals, university faculty and high school teachers, as well as off-campus supporters and local groups. The Program is sponsored by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), publisher of Skeptical Inquirer Magazine.

The purpose of the organization is to develop a skeptical presence on university, college and high school campuses across the world, raise awareness about the need for critical inquiry in all realms and provide a voice for science and reason - increasing its volume to global proportions.

The mission of the organization is to promote science, skepticism and critical inquiry through educational programs, outreach efforts, events and activity. The primary tools of our mission are education and investigation.

Students for Science and Reason is a science and educational organization. It restricts itself to empirically-based claims - those ideas and beliefs that can be objectively tested and potentially verified - as opposed to faith-based claims. It sees no inherent conflict between science and religion, in that science concerns the natural world (the one accessible to our senses and instruments), while religion concerns the possibility of a supernatural world accessible only through faith. Empirical-based religious claims, however, such as weeping icons and miraculous healings, are open to scientific skepticism and investigation.

Students, educators and off-campus members are invited to share ideas and resources through the web-based program and participate in dialogue that may help shape our communities and that will direct the future of our efforts.

Site visitors and SSR members are encouraged to support our efforts by signing "The Skeptical Perspective," a document that provides an overview of our position and our commitment to the tools of science, skepticism and critical inquiry - tools that generate understanding and knowledge and provide our global community with the ability to face the challenges of the 21st Century.
