Image ALCHEMY
Alchemy originated at a time when science, philosophy, religion and art were much more interconnected than today. The ancient practice of alchemy could be found in civilizations of both the East and West.
The word is derived from the Arabic word for the Philosopher's Stone. The various ideas and practices found within the subject of alchemy derived from the techniques used in mining, smelting and blacksmithery. In ancient times, these trades all contained mystical elements and were considered to be the domain of religious masters who passed down their skills through secret rites.
Alchemy is the forerunner of chemistry and pharmacology as well as several occult practices and new age ideas. Alchemists sought to cure diseases, achieve immortality and transmute base metals into gold. Their work employed complex systems of ritual and symbolism.
Alchemy has provided a rich and fascinating collection of text and artwork that is of great value to historians, archaeologists and all who appreciate the products of ancient civilizations. Alchemy also contributed worthwhile information to many fields of science. Many of the original goals of alchemy, however, have now been found to be improbable according to our knowledge of the universe and the laws of nature. Immortality, time manipulation, age reversal and other aspirations of the alchemist are not possible through the ritual and practice employed through alchemy. This failure is partly why the practice has been largely abandoned although it has resurfaced as a fad since ancient times - medieval Europe, post-Renaissance and today's New Age have all resurrected the art and practice for various purposes.
