EXPERIMENT

Familiar Sounds:

We can imitate a variety of sounds by using household objects. This shows that there are a lot of different sounds out there that may be something else entirely.

  • Rain: make a chute of waxed paper and pour sugar slowly down it from the top. Hold the paper at an angle so the sugar runs down.
  • Wind: lay three strips of wood side by side and pull a silk or polyester cloth across them several times.
  • Thunder: shake a flexible baking sheet or thick aluminum foil from one corner.
  • Fire: crumple a large piece of cellophane plastic wrap in front of a microphone.
  • Train: rub two sheets of sandpaper together and slowly pick up speed.
  • Jet Plane: turn a hairdryer on and cover and uncover the exhaust at the back with a towel.

These sound effects can be great for using in school plays and skits. They might also shed a bit of light on many of the sounds that are associated with paranormal claims.
